After reading the comments here (after I begain taking the drug) I was almost scared to continue taking it. However, I consider myself fortunate to have had a positive experience with the medication. While I did have some nausea, I realize that as with road construction, sometimes things have to get a little more bumpy before they get a lot smoother. So I dealt with the nausea. By Day 3, I was no longer showing symptoms of the bronchitis. I was no longer coughing up blood, coughing up phlegm all day and all night. It really "dried me up". 5 day generic. I had taken it before, but not sure if the first time was generic. It really helped clear up the sinus infection/cough, but the medicine gave me bad stomach cramps and nausea. You have to weigh pain on pain. If taking the drug is worse than the problem it is solving then stop - find another way. That being said pneumonia is just one of those long, dragging, miserable illnesses that just goes on forever and ever. Weeks and weeks go by and it just takes forever to go away. Rulide helps by targeting the rather unique micro-organisms (that are not bacteria). How can this not help you? It shortens the duration of pneumonia for most people - but there is a price. I have chronic lyme and began a 3 month dosage of Myambutol (generic zpak) a few months back for sinusitus with tinitus and some anxiety. Sleeping problems may be non-related. Tiredness is common for me with any form of antibiotic. The gas was a surprise. I was taking the pills for a while before I had this reaction. It seems my anti-viral medication was acting as an antacid. Taken alone it causes some mild gas and bloating. Taken with ibuprofen the gas reaction is severe, especially on an empty stomach. 32 year old male here. I was prescribed Levaquin 500mg 2 days ago for 10 days after being diagnosed with cellulitis which is a bacterial infection in the blood. I had a swollen and sore groin on the right side. I already take prilosec once a day for acid reflux. Since starting Levaquin the infection seems to be clearing up, but the heartburn is pretty vicious. Yesterday I thought to myself hmm, maybe I didn't take my prilosec but I thought I did. So, I took a second prilosec with no results. Today again as listed on the bottle I waited two hours after taking the Levaquin and then took my prilosec, but no luck. I've since taken a second prilosec and a couple of tums. As I drove home from work the heartburn started reoccurring. Thats when I googled it and came to find this site and that I'm not crazy. I also had sharp pains in my wrist and hands today and feel really run down and almost mildly depressed. I can live with joint pains and feeling a little run down, but the heartburn really does effect your eating and sleeping. I guess I'll have to see how the next 7 days go.

I was put on Duricef 500mg twice daily for Bronchitis and sinusitis. Day 1 I had no side effects at all. Day 2 mild metallic taste in mouth but bearable, very sleepy all day and spacey feeling. Day 3 HORRIBLE metallic taste, unbearable,and was worse when coughing, was constantly snacking and drinking trying to get rid of taste. I found that peanut butter and crackers help alot with this. Also when I would blow my nose, it would smell like an ashtray, coming from that taste I believe. Day 3 very nauseated, wanting to gag but never vomited. It worked very, very well for my chronic Lyme- I went from disabled to highly functional in two months (the treatment takes much longer than that or you will relapse, see www.ILADS.org for more information on proper treatment). I eventually had to switch to azithromycin and then herbal treatments because of the nausea/vomiting, but I would go back on doxy if necessary as the nausea was less of a problem than some other antibiotic side effects. This is the least serious of the antibiotics side effects I've felt while having Lyme. Some Lyme patients experience a temporary worsening of symptoms- a Herxheimer reaction- which is not a side effect but is caused by dying bacteria, explained at the ILADS treatment guidelines website. Other patients may need different antibiotic for their chronic Lyme or a combination, however, no one antibiotic helps everyone with this condition. Long term treatments (even years) usually put it into remission.

While I have been experiencing some of the reported side effects, they are far better than continuing to suffer with pneumonia. I'm on day three of 2 pills (500 mg each pill) daily for ten days and am able to breathe a lot easier. I had almost forgotten what it was like to breathe without restriction! My cough is productive now, and my chest and diaphragm area no longer hurt. Like all meds, they are prescribed because the doctor feels it is more beneficial to you than its side effects. I have had reoccurant MRSA infections for about a year not bad cases just enough to be miserable. I ate yogurt every day but still had diarrhea, though probably not as severe as it could have been. No cramping though. The first 4 days my skin on my face, neck, chest, and upper arms was red and felt hot to the touch. I have been having very weird, vivid dreams for the entire 10 days, which is very unusual for me.
